Heavy hitting drums, pounding bass, thrash and groove metal influenced guitars, and vocals that are both hardcore and haunting: Regina’s Nine Gates finds the balance between intriguing your gentler side with melodic interludes and arousing your inner aggression with relentless riffs and beats so intense that even your heart wants to move in time to the music. The songs on their self-titled EP, released in January 2014, deal with the anguish associated with cutting off unwanted relationships – making it easy to relate to them on a basic human level – while the heavy grooves, thrashy rhythms, and ripping leads of their Pantera, Metallica, and Lamb of God influenced sound are heavy enough to leave your grandma convinced that they’re actually singing about the devil. “Pounding drums accompanied by crushing guitars, deep, dark bass and aggressive vocals help make the music of Regina's Nine Gates perfect for ANY metal fan! A simple approach followed up with pure power, passion and talent,” says Regina music commentator Taron Cochrane.
Nine Gates’ goal was simple – to write music and perform live – but they knew how much hard work and dedication it would take to reach that goal. They spent nearly a year writing, cutting, re-writing, and arranging. “But we’re not trying to do anything too complicated. We just want to make music that people can enjoy and bang their heads to,” says drummer Tim Zerr.
In June 2012, they played their first show at the Gaslight Saloon in Regina, having put so much work into tightening up their sound that many audience members were left wondering where they came from and why they’d never heard them before. After playing more shows in the winter and spring of 2013, they worked with engineer/producer Justin Bender (Into Eternity) to record their self-titled EP at Blue Door Recording Studio. Bender describes Nine Gates as “super hard working guys who put their many modern metal influences to perfect use, executed with precision.”
